Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Ahmed Khan on Thursday filed a reference with the ECP to disqualify 26 opposition MPAs for their actions deemed to have “disparaged the sanctity of the house”.
The MPAs from the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) are the ones against whom the electoral supervisor received the reference.
Speaking to the media, the speaker affirmed the development and warned that those who disregarded the house’s sanctity would not escape punishment. He went on to say, “The issue is with the ECP, which may disqualify such members.”
According to Malik Ahmed Khan, misbehavior, foul language, and violence in parliament are not democratic norms. “The attitude is anti-democracy.”
He emphasized that each member of parliament takes an oath to uphold the Constitution and stated that Article 63 of the Constitution clearly outlines the requirements for disqualification. He promised to fight for constitutional protection.
The Punjab Assembly speaker, Malik Ahmed Khan, said, “It is my duty to maintain order in the house.” “I am showing patience for more than one and a half years. I have to justify my role as the speaker,” he said.
Previously, the speaker instructed a legal team to draft a reference for consultation before possibly submitting it to the ECP for the de-seating of 26 suspended SIC MPAs for their alleged disruptive, abusive, and disorderly conduct in the house.
