The nation observed the martyrdom of Nishan-e-Haider recipient Captain Karnal Sher Khan Shaheed, remembering his exceptional bravery and sacrifice during the Kargil conflict.
Captain Sher Khan joined the Sindh Regiment in 1995 after being commissioned into the Pakistan Army in November 1992. He volunteered to serve at the Line of Control in January 1998 and was later assigned to the Northern Light Infantry.
Indian forces launched a fierce attack on Kargil’s Drass Sector on June 28, 1999. With just 14 men in command, Captain Sher Khan responded with a determined defense that drove the enemy back and halted their advance.
Captain Karnal Sher Khan lost his life while fighting the enemy on July 5, 1999. His finger is said to have remained on his weapon’s trigger at the moment of martyrdom, and he fought until his last breath.
The fallen hero was honored by senior military leadership, including the Armed Forces, Service Chiefs, the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir. According to an ISPR statement, his act of bravery in the face of overwhelming adversity exemplified the best traditions of the Pakistan Army. In order to protect national sovereignty, Captain Karnal Sher Khan Shaheed gave his life.
