Following the collapse of a five-storey building in Karachi Lyari, which killed at least 6 people, Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has issued a list of unsafe buildings that are to be vacated at Karachi.
578 buildings were previously stated as dangerous, the greatest portion (456) in the District South.
The report shows that District South is the most hit as out of the 578 buildings that are declared hazardous in Karachi. As reported by SBCA, 66 and 23 risky buildings are reported in the District Central and Keamari respectively, 14 in Korangi, 13 in District East, 4 in Malir and 2 in District West.
This agency has noted that the building that collapsed in Baghdadi was already considered unsafe and three times it had been issued with notices in the past two years to vacate the building but it could not be effected.
These exposures amount to a wake up call to the citizens and the authorities are questioned whether the precious loss of lives could have been prevented had they acted in time.
The civic circles are asking the unsafe buildings to be evacuated and accommodation among the affected families and action against the culprits who have been found to have been negligent should be stern.
