Iran’s judiciary spokesperson announced on Monday that 935 people died in the 12-day air war with Israel, based on the latest forensic evidence.
According to spokesperson Asghar Jahangir, among the dead were 38 children and 132 women.
The Iranian health ministry said 610 people had been killed in Iran before a ceasefire went into effect on Tuesday; the current death toll is a sharp rise.
Jahangir also raised the number of Israeli strikes on Tehran’s Evin Prison from 71 to 79.
Israel launched an air campaign targeting Iranian nuclear facilities on June 13 that killed both civilians and top military officials, dealing the Islamic Republic its worst blow since the 1980s war with Iraq.
Iran retaliated by firing a barrage of missiles at Israeli military installations, infrastructure, and cities. The United States entered the war on June 22 by attacking Iranian nuclear facilities.
Esmaeil Baghaei, a spokesman for the foreign ministry, claimed that Israel’s “act of aggression had led to many war crimes.” He claimed that Iran would provide evidence to international organizations that ought to hold Israel responsible.
At a routine press briefing, Baghaei told reporters, “We do not believe in separating military and civilian (victims) because the Zionist regime’s (Israel) action was done without any reason or justification.”
Any “martyr or destroyed building is an example of war crimes,” he said.
