Rumors about Babar Azam’s retirement from Test cricket went viral on social media after the Pakistan vs. Bangladesh Test series.
The right-handed batter, Babar Azam, faced criticism following his disappointing performance, where Pakistan was whitewashed 2-0 by Bangladesh.
Several fake posts circulated on social media, claiming that Babar Azam announced his Test retirement.
The fake posts went viral as Pakistan struggled to save the second Test against Bangladesh.
Some posts on the social media platform X suggested that Babar Azam, Pakistan’s white-ball captain, decided to retire from Test cricket. Another post mocked Babar Azam’s batting technique and his performance stats after being removed from the Test captaincy.
However, it was soon revealed that these posts were from parody accounts on X and not from Babar Azam’s official accounts.
The first fake post came from an X account titled “Jay Shah (parody),” which falsely shared Babar Azam’s retirement news. Another fake post appeared from an account called “Babar Azam – Parody,” further proving the posts were unofficial.
Despite the Babar Azam retirement rumors, his official X and Instagram accounts did not mention any such decision.
The right-handed batter scored only 64 runs in four innings in the two-match Test series against Bangladesh, averaging just 16. In the first Test match, Babar Azam was dismissed for a duck in the first inning and scored 22 runs in the second.
In the second Test, Babar Azam managed 31 runs in the first inning and only 11 in the second, failing to convert his starts into substantial scores.
The rumors of Babar Azam’s retirement came as he continues to face criticism for his overall Test performance, having scored only 317 runs in eight Test matches in 2023, with his last century in December 2022 against New Zealand in Karachi.
