The Search and Rescue Agency said Thursday that a ferry carrying 65 people sank off the Indonesian island of Bali, killing four, leaving 38 missing, and 23 rescued.
The KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya went down near 30 minutes after it left the Banyuwangi port in East Java province bound to Bali late on Wednesday, the agency said on Thursday.
The boat had in it 53 passengers, 12 crew members and 22 vehicles, the agency stated. The agency added that strong currents and winds are hindering the search for the missing.
In Indonesia where there are more than 17,000 islands, ferries are a popular means of transport and accidents are frequent because of poor safety standards frequently leading to overloading and inadequate life-saving facilities.
In 2023 a small ferry capsized off the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia leaving a minimum of 15 people dead.
