Careem has stated it will shut down its ride-hailing service in Pakistan on July 18, 2025, concluding its decade-long run in one of its biggest markets.
In a formal statement sent to users, the company thanked people for their support over the years and recognized that the decision wasn’t easy.
Careem assured customers who had balances in their Careem Wallets that they would be instructed soon on how to retrieve their money.
“If you have a residual balance in your Careem Wallet, we’ll be contacting you shortly with clear guidance on how to retrieve it. Careem Care will continue to be accessible until 18th September 2025, in order to assist you with any outstanding issues or queries you may have,” their announcement continued.
Customer service under “Careem Care” will continue to work through September 18, 2025, in order to solve all open cases.
The ride-hailing app has withdrawn from Pakistan in the face of stiff competition from alternatives. Services such as Yango and inDrive have been a significant advantage over the Dubai-based super app and have dominated the ride-hailing industry for some time now.
The Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder Mudassir Sheikha posted on LinkedIn that it was a very tough call. “The adverse macroeconomic environment, rising competition, and allocation of global capital made it unwise to invest the required levels to provide a safe and reliable service in the country. Ultimately, the Careem Rides team had to make this difficult decision,” he stated.
Careem initially introduced its ride-hailing services in Pakistan in 2016, exactly in Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad. They timed their launch well as 3G and 4G connectivity were becoming available all over the country at that point.
