Lahore is set to introduce eco-friendly transportation as Punjab Transport Company unveiled its Electric Bus project in a soft launch. Full scale commercial operations will begin on Wednesday.
Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif is scheduled to inaugurate the transportation project, focusing on reducing pollution and improving urban mobility.
The electric buses that are imported from China will benefit 17000 citizens daily. A total of 27 electric buses will add to the Punjab transport department.
The department showcased a short documentary on the buses and highlighted their features.
Buses have the capacity of almost 83 passengers, with 32 seats and space for 48 standing passengers.
Two seats will be reserved for people with disabilities.
A separate section will be for women, while driver will have a cabin equipped with new control tools. This will enhance passengers’ comfort and safe travel.
These buses are introduced with the features of Wi-Fi, USB-Charging ports and GPS. Cameras are also installed for onboard surveillance.
Digital wallets and smart cards can also be used for paying fare. A mobile app will be introduced for real time tracking.
Buses have the range of 300 km, and they will be charged in two and half hours. The department established a charging station as will in green town.
The Chief Minister spent almost 2.4 billion on the project and it will be step toward green and sustainable mode of transportation.
Buses will have an operational lifespan of 12 year and each bus valued 88 billion.
