Punjabi music sensation and Bollywood actor Diljit Dosanjh has found himself at the center of controversy following the release of the trailer for his upcoming film Sardaar Ji 3.
The movie, which stars Pakistani actress Hania Aamir in a leading role, has drawn criticism from Indian film industry bodies in the wake of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan.
The uproar began after India’s recent decision to reinforce its ban on Pakistani artists, a move prompted by political tensions between the two nations.
Hania Aamir’s participation in the project has become a point of contention, with some Indian film associations threatening Dosanjh with industry-wide repercussions if he proceeds with the release. Sources reveal that the singer-turned-actor has been warned about potential blacklisting from future projects within India.
In response to the controversy, Diljit spoke to BBC Asia, clarifying that filming for Sardaar Ji 3 had wrapped up earlier this year in February—before the diplomatic situation deteriorated. He emphasized that political climates are unpredictable, and the decision to cast Hania was made well before any cross-border conflict arose.
Acknowledging the financial challenges the production now faces, Diljit explained that the film will not be released in India and will instead target international markets to recover some of its costs. He admitted that skipping the Indian box office will result in losses but said the team hopes to minimize the impact by focusing on overseas audiences.
Speaking about his experience working with Hania Aamir, Dosanjh had nothing but praise. Calling her a true professional, he compared her dedication to that of his frequent co-star Neeru Bajwa.
“I always ensure a respectful environment for all my female co-stars,” he said, adding that Hania was no exception and that collaborating with her was a positive experience.
Meanwhile, the internet has responded with humor and support for the film’s international release. Social media users from Pakistan and beyond have shared messages of encouragement, with some suggesting the film should premiere in Pakistan to ensure box office success. Others joked that by focusing on foreign audiences, the film might even turn a larger profit in dollars.
Despite the political backdrop, Diljit remains focused on letting the audience decide the fate of Sardaar Ji 3, which now stands as a project caught between entertainment and international politics.
