After Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir met with the business community in Karachi, the Federal Bureau of Revenue (FBR) is probably going to extend the deadline for filing tax reports.
According to sources inside the FBR, individuals, associations of individuals, businesses, and firms will likely have a 15-day extension on the deadline for submitting income tax returns for the year 2023–2024.
This is the result of the tax authorities ruling down a deadline extension for September 30 last week.
In the past, a facility was provided [to the general public] by extending the deadline.
The deadline for filing tax returns is September 30.
This time, however, the decision has been reached not to extend the deadline, according to FBR spokeswoman Bakhtiar Muhammad, who was speaking to local media.
The spokesperson acknowledged that some filers would find it challenging to send in their returns by the deadline, but advised those individuals to contact their local tax commissioners in order to request a specific extension as allowed by law.
Due to their unique circumstances, they are able to obtain an extension; nonetheless, he stated that the deadline would not be extended for the entire nation past September 30.
However, the tax authority is considering extending the deadline after the corporate community indicated during a meeting with the army chief that the FBR should make things easier for firms rather than more difficult.
The meeting in question is related to COAS General Munir’s visit to Karachi, where he met with the business community and praised their efforts to the country’s economic prosperity, according to an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement issued on Friday.
Atif Ikram, President of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), has also urged that FBR Chairman Rashid Mahmood Langriyal and his staff extend the deadline for filing returns till October 15.
Ikram stated that he was in continual touch with the FBR regarding his idea, and that the deadline for submitting yearly tax returns for people should be extended to October 15 so that full tax returns could be filed and taxpayers’ concerns could be relieved.
