Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir met with Azerbaijani Defence Minister Colonel General Hasanov Zakir Asgar Oglu on Wednesday in Lachin, Azerbaijan.

According to a statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the two leaders discussed issues of mutual concern, regional security developments, and strategies to deepen defence collaboration between Pakistan and Azerbaijan.

Field Marshal Munir commended the strong and friendly relations shared by the two nations and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to boosting military ties with Azerbaijan.

The army chief is accompanying Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during his official visit to Azerbaijan to attend the Pakistan-Turkiye-Azerbaijan Trilateral Summit.

Other members of the high-level Pakistani delegation include Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi.

Prime Minister Shehbaz reached Lachin, the third destination on his five-day regional tour, which comes amid rising tensions due to recent military provocations by India.

In a meeting held on Tuesday with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, PM Shehbaz expressed gratitude for Azerbaijan’s steadfast support during the latest confrontation with India, which was sparked by missile attacks from New Delhi. He also appreciated the solidarity shown by the Azerbaijani leadership and people.

The prime minister recalled the celebrations in Azerbaijan following Pakistan’s victory in a brief conflict with India, underlining the deep-rooted friendship and mutual support between the two nations.

Both leaders reviewed the entire spectrum of bilateral relations and voiced satisfaction over the growing cooperation in political, economic, defence, and cultural spheres.

The Azerbaijani side agreed to enhance investment collaboration and announced plans to send official delegations to Pakistan soon, with talks expected to begin in the near future.
