The Guardian published a story on Tuesday, citing US sources, about the stabbing deaths of four American college lecturers who took classes in China during the day.
On Tuesday, Jilin police said that they had taken into custody a 55-year-old male with the last name Cui who was thought to be the attacker. The four teachers and a Chinese individual who intervened to assist were injured when Cui “collided” with one of the Americans prior to assaulting the group, according to the police.
The college’s instructors suffered assaults on Monday while visiting a park in the northeastern region of Jilin, China, according to a statement released by Jonathan Brand, president of Cornell College in Iowa.
He added that a faculty member from Beihua University was among them.
It was unknown how many people were hurt in the daylight attack and if it was intentional or not.
Representative for Iowa Adam Zabner informed US media that a guy with a knife stabbed his brother David Zabner and other members of the party who were visiting a temple in Beishan Park.
According to David, who was recovering in the hospital, he “was wounded in the arm after a stabbing attack while attending a temple in Jilin City, China,” he told Reuters.
On Monday, a video appeared on X showing individuals laying on the ground in a park soaked in blood.
Chinese media has not published any news on the event, nor have Chinese authorities released any remarks on it.
In a statement, the state department stated that it was keeping an eye on the situation and was aware of reports of a stabbing.
The incident took place as Washington and Beijing work to preserve interpersonal communication in order to keep their bilateral ties from worsening.
Chinese officials claim that a travel advice issued by the US State Department has deterred Americans from visiting China, despite Chinese President Xi Jinping’s announcement of a plan to welcome 50,000 young Americans to China over the course of the next five years.
According to US data, there are more than 290,000 Chinese students studying in the US, whereas there are less than 900 US exchange students studying in China.
