‘Gender-Equality’: In a first, woman notified as Lambardar in Arifwala
TwitterFacebook

PAKPATTAN: First time in history of Arifwala, a woman has been notified as Lambardar, (village leader).

Pakpattan Deputy Commissioner (DC) Sadia Mehr gave official notification of the appointment to Amna Bibi, a resident of 22 KB village Arifwala.

The appointment of a woman as Lambardar has received applause as a positive step towards empowering women and promotion of gender-equality in rural areas.

In the history of Pakistan, Begum Sarwat Imtiaz was first female who took oath as Lambardar Chak 43/12 L, Chichawatni, district Montgomery (now Sahiwal) in 1959.

Amna Bibi is the first woman to hold this position in Arifwala, and one of the few in the entire Punjab province.

She will be responsible for overseeing affairs of the village, such as resolution of disputes, taxes collection, maintaining records, and liaising with the district administration.

The Lambardari system in Pakistan is based on the pre-partition Indian land revenue system.

Lambardar is a semi-hereditary status in Punjab, where Zamindars with considerable landholdings and hereditary status usually serve as Lambardars.
