The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has also issued a warning for possible Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in Gilgit Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to heatwave caused glacier melts.
The official alert issued by the PMD’s Research and Development Division in Islamabad says that a continued rise in temperatures, complemented by an incoming weather system, could lead to flash flooding in susceptible northern valleys during the next few days.
This elevated meltwater might lead to sudden glacial lake burstings, triggering disastrous GLOF occurrences and flash floods in nearby valleys and downstream villages, it added.
The PMD has specifically alerted residents, local authorities, and concerned departments in GB and KP to remain on high alert since the situation might take a turn for the worse during the ongoing and next week.
In view of the threat, PMD has directed all the concerned departments and emergency response units to be on high alert and to take safety measures to avoid the risk of any unwanted event.
Issuing a different advisory, the weather department has predicted heavy rain in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Nowshera, and Peshawar on 10th Muharram.
The Met Office has also forecast a warning of potential urban flooding in Punjab city low-lying areas because of the severity of the expected rainfall.
However, the majority of Sindh and Balochistan will continue to be hot and humid, according to the advisory.
Karachi and Hyderabad may see light rain or drizzle, especially in the morning and evening.
