A 22-year-old married Gujrat woman from Patan district has been detained, along with her 21-year-old lover, for allegedly murdering a guy and faking her own death.
According to police reports the woman disguised the corpse in her clothes and setting it on fire in a terrifying plot inspired by the Bollywood film Drishyam.
Late Tuesday, authorities retrieved the half-burned body near a pond in Jakhotra village. The victim, initially misidentified as a woman due to his traditional skirt and anklets, was eventually identified as Harjibhai Solanki, a 56-year-old nomadic resident of a nearby village.
The accused Gujrat woman Geeta Ahir and her lover, Bharat Ahir were captured hours later at Palanpur railway station when they were allegedly about to board a train to Rajasthan.
According to Patan’s Superintendent of Police V. K. Nayi, Geeta conceived the scheme after viewing Drishyam and its sequel, convincing her lover to assist her in staging her own death so they could elope.
Geeta left her home on the night of May 28th, while her family was sleeping. Around the same time, Bharat allegedly picked up Solanki, strangled him in a remote spot, and then brought his body to the pond. The two dressed the corpse in Geeta’s clothes and doused it with petrol before setting it on fire.
The burnt remains were discovered by family members, who believed they were Geeta’s. Their disbelief escalated to horror when they discovered the body belonged to a man.
The plot unraveled quickly. Police arrested the couple after locating them at the station based on intelligence. During interrogation, both admitted to the crimes.
Police have accused the two with murder and criminal conspiracy. The case is still under investigation.
