WASA alert: The twin cities experienced overnight rainfall, prompting the Water and Sanitation Agency to declare a rain emergency and issue a high alert due to potential water accumulation.
WASA Managing Director Muhammad Saleem Ashraf says WASA teams have been using heavy machinery in low-lying areas. He claimed that in order to ensure efficient drainage, equipment was dispatched to Committee Chowk Underpass and Murree Road as soon as the rain began.
The Meteorological Department reported that Saidpur received 80 mm of rainfall, followed by PMD with 40 mm, Shamsabad with 20 mm, and Pirwadhai with 15 mm.
The WASA MD continued by saying that the Nullah Lai catchment area, particularly Saidpur, received 80 mm of rain in a single hour. As of right now, the flow in Nullah Lai is normal, and the water level is constantly being monitored.
The water level in Nullah Lai increased to eleven feet at Katarian and five feet at Gawalmandi Bridge. But when the rain stopped, the water level went back to five feet.
The head of WASA pledged that the department is in constant communication with all pertinent agencies and is equipped to manage any possible emergency.
The public has been urged to stay away from low-lying areas whenever possible and to call WASA’s helpline right away in case of an emergency.
According to the National Disaster Management Authority, flash floods and heavy rains have killed 64 people and injured 117 more nationwide in the last week.
Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa has been the hardest hit, with 23 fatalities, including 10 children. There were 21 fatalities in Punjab, 15 in Sindh, and 5 in Balochistan.
