HEC warns public about rising cyber threats
TwitterFacebook

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has sounded a dire warning about an upsurge in cyber-attacks all over Pakistan, citing the growing advanced nature of malicious parties.

These cyber attackers are using devious methods like false links, QR codes, and spam messages to pilfer sensitive details and disperse misinformation.

In a recent tweet on X, the HEC emphasized the immediate need for greater digital awareness among the populace.

“Cyber-attacks are increasing. Cyber-criminals steal your information using fake links, QR codes & phishing emails,” the post said. “Don’t open suspicious links. Authenticate sources. Install antivirus & MFA (Multi-factor authentication). Your vigilance guards you and Pakistan’s cyber space.”

With an increase in reports of such online threats, the HEC took to social media to share an example of how common tactics used by cybercriminals to target unsuspecting individuals.

As per the commission, attackers mislead users through:

  • “Fake URLs that resemble legitimate websites — typically employing lookalike characters or abbreviated links
  • Phishing messages emulating the design and logos of reliable institutions
  • Hijacked social media accounts propagating malicious links
  • Shady WhatsApp/SMS forwards instructing you to click in a hurry
  • Infected websites and adverts concealing malicious downloads
  • QR codes that lead to malicious sites
  • Files from suspicious platforms with malicious links embedded”

Protective measures

In the wake of this growing danger, the HEC wholeheartedly recommends that people follow the following precautions:

  • Don’t click on unfamiliar links — hover to check first.
  • Get updates from official government or NCERT platforms alone.
  • Don’t believe forwarded messages or spurious QR codes.
  • Employ antivirus, activate multi-factor authentication, and change your passwords.

HEC emphasized that personal vigilance is not only crucial in protecting one’s information but also in safeguarding “Pakistan’s digital space” from being used for ill intent.

With proper vigilance and these preventive steps, citizens can drastically cut down their chance of falling prey to such emerging cyber-crimes.
