Tesla CEO Elon Musk said earlier this week that he will be traveling to India to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and will probably make an announcement about an investment and the establishment of a plant there.
He said on X, the platform that was once known as Twitter, that he was “looking forward to meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in India!”
The tech mogul, along with other executives, is scheduled to meet with Modi in New Delhi on April 22. According to Reuters, which cited two sources, Musk may alter his itinerary while in India.
Musk’s trip to India coincides with the country’s upcoming two-month election, which is anticipated to draw up to a billion votes.
An announcement of a Tesla investment during the election would bolster Modi’s reputation as a business-friendly politician who encourages foreign firms to establish production facilities in India and generate employment.
In June of last year, Musk and Modi met in New York, and Tesla has been urging India to reduce import duties on electric cars.
India just unveiled a new EV policy that would reduce import duties on some models from 100% to 15% provided a company spends at least $500 million and establishes a facility.
This month, representatives from Tesla will travel to India to look at possible locations for a $2 billion investment in production.
According to Reuters, the business has also begun producing right-hand drive cars at its German facility for shipment to India later this year.
