Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, was killed by an attack on the organization’s main headquarters in the southern suburbs of Beirut, the Israeli military announced on Saturday.
Hezbollah representatives were not immediately reachable by Reuters for response on the Israeli army statement. The Iran-backed Hezbollah, which has been led by Nasrallah for 32 years, has not yet released an official comment about his situation.
Nasrallah was earlier confirmed to be alive by a Hezbollah-affiliated source and confirmed to be safe by Iran’s Tasnim news agency. Tehran was verifying his status, an Iranian security official in a top position told Reuters.
Hezbollah has developed into a regional force that has extended Tehran’s influence throughout the Middle East throughout Nasrallah’s decades in power.
His passing would be a devastating blow to Iran, whose Revolutionary Guards established Hezbollah in 1982, as well as to Hezbollah itself. Israeli military spokesman Avichay Adraee said in a statement on X that the Israeli force “eliminated… Hassan Nasrallah, leader of the Hezbollah terrorist organization.”
