ISLAMABAD – Election Commission of Pakistan will indict Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf chairman and former premier Imran Khan next week on charges of hurling insulting at its officials last year.
The country’s top electoral watchdog summoned the PTI chief for a personal appearance for indictment in a contempt case against him and other party leaders.
In 2022, ECP started contempt proceedings against former PM, PTI leader Asad Umar and ex-PTI stalwart Fawad Chaudhry for foul language against the chief election commissioner.
Leaders of the ruling leader challenged powers to initiate contempt proceedings under Section 10 of the Election Act 2017 in different high courts, the country’s top court earlier this year gave a nod to the proceedings of Imran Khan.
In recent times, PTI leaders failed to appear before ECP despite repeated summons, and issued arrest warrants for former premier and ex-party leader Chaudhary; however, it accepted Umar’s plea to be exempted from the last hearing.
Earlier this month, ECP issued arrest warrants for the PTI chief, who is facing over 150 cases since being removed from power, and the ousted PM appeared at the electoral authority the next day.
Meanwhile, Imran Khan’s requested that he did not have the record of the case, and the counsel requested to get the record and prepare the case.
