Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri locked his X account on Sunday after facing intense trolling following the May 10 ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
According to Indian media, no senior member of the central government, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, has publicly defended Misri or condemned the online abuse.
The ceasefire, which ended a four-day military confrontation between the neighboring countries, was brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump. However, right-wing social media users criticized Misri, labeling him a “traitor” and accusing him of undermining India’s strategic position by agreeing to the truce.
Some users resurfaced Vikram Misri old personal posts, including family photos, and subjected his daughter to personal attacks. She was targeted for studying abroad and her previous work with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), where she provided legal aid to Rohingya refugees in Myanmar.
The image circulating online displays Misri’s now-locked X account.
As Foreign Secretary, Misri led the Ministry of External Affairs’ public communications during the Operation Sindoor military action launched against Pakistan on May 7, in response to accusations linking Pakistan to the April Pahalgam attacks.
Pakistan retaliated on May 9 with a counteroffensive named Bunyan um Marsoos, targeting Indian military installations in response to what it described as a violation of its sovereignty.
The ceasefire between the two nuclear-armed nations was finalized under U.S. mediation the following day.
