According to officials and activists, Iranian authorities are abandoning a ceasefire with Israel in favor of a more aggressive domestic security crackdown that includes mass arrests, executions, and military deployments around the nation, especially in the unrest-plagued Kurdish area.
Iranian security forces launched a campaign of mass arrests and a heightened street presence centered around checkpoints within days of Israel’s attacks, which began on June 13, according to authorities and activists.
The top security official stated that internal security was now the main priority and that the Revolutionary Guard and Basij paramilitary troops were placed on notice.
According to the person, officials were concerned about ethnic separatists, Israeli operatives, and the People’s Mujahideen Organization, an opposition group in exile that has carried out assaults within Iran in the past.
The nation’s activists are keeping quiet.
A rights activist in Tehran who was imprisoned during large-scale demonstrations in 2022 stated, “We are being extremely cautious right now because there’s a real concern the regime might use this situation as a pretext.”
According to the activist, scores of people he knew had been called by the authorities and either arrested or cautioned not to express any criticism.
