Iran’s sejjil-2 missile launch on Israel raises concerns over air defense gap

Tensions in the Middle East have deepened following Iran’s reported launch of its long-range Sejjil-2 ballistic missiles toward Israel, a move that has drawn sharp focus after several of the projectiles reportedly slipped past Israel’s advanced defense systems.

Iranian state outlet Tasnim News Agency stated that the latest missile launch forms part of Tehran’s ongoing response to Israeli military actions. The use of the Sejjil-2, with its reach exceeding 2,000 kilometers, marked the 13th retaliatory strike in what Iran frames as a counter to repeated Israeli offensives.

Israeli defense sources confirmed that one of the ballistic missiles made impact in the Dan Bloc area, noting that it appeared significantly larger and carried a more potent explosive charge than typical missiles previously used.

“This wasn’t a routine projectile,” an Israeli defense figure, Kadosh, reportedly commented, emphasizing that Iran had deployed this class of missile sparingly so far.

The Sejjil-2’s two-stage solid-fuel design enables rapid deployment compared to older liquid-fueled models, making it more versatile and harder to intercept. Each missile is believed to carry a warhead weighing between 500 to 650 kilograms, and analysts describe its targeting system as precise and launch-ready.

In addition to the Sejjil-2, Iranian officials also hinted at the use of hypersonic missiles during the same strike. These weapons, due to the extensive range of the Sejjil system, can reportedly be launched from nearly any point across Iranian territory — not just from the western provinces as traditionally seen.

The Sejjil missile program, publicly introduced in 2008, stems from strategic efforts initiated by Iran in the late 1990s aimed at enhancing its long-range military capabilities and strengthening deterrence.

As hostilities escalate, Tehran has issued strong warnings to Israeli civilians residing in what it refers to as “occupied areas,” urging them to either take shelter or evacuate.

The incident has sparked global attention, highlighting both the evolving nature of missile warfare and potential vulnerabilities in air defense technologies in high-tension regions.
