Islamabad High Court Bar Association has written a letter to the United States of America’s US President Donald Trump seeking a pardon for Dr. Aafia Siddiqui and expressing concern over her plight.
Bar President Riyat Ali Azad penned the open letter, with copies also shared with leaders of the Aafia Movement.
The letter highlights that, upon reviewing Dr. Aafia’s case from a legal perspective, her situation is deeply concerning. It describes the case as one of the most tragic in history, marked by severe human rights violations.
The letter further added that during initial detention and trial, rules and regulations were ignored and concerns of bias were repeatedly expressed. The medical records also show signs of physical and mental torture during detention.
Furthermore, the letter mentioned the worrying history of the Carseoul jail. Many leaders, including former Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, have called Dr. Aafia “the daughter of the nation.”
The letter also states that Dr. Aafia was kept away from meeting her family and children, which is against basic human rights.
At the end of the letter, it is said that the United States has long been opposed to violence against women and children, but such treatment of Dr. Aafia reflects its contradictions, which can lead to discrediting the United States on the global stage.
