The Iran-Israel conflict intensified late Sunday with Israeli airstrikes targeting three major airports near the Iranian capital, including Mehrabad Airport in Tehran, Karaj Airport, and Imam Khomeini International Airport.
Witnesses reported hearing at least two large explosions in rapid succession, followed by the activation of air defense systems, as loud explosions shook different parts of Tehran.
The strikes coincide with a dramatic increase in tensions, as both nations have been launching retaliatory attacks in recent days.
Government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani said on Iranian state television that mosques and metro stations throughout Tehran would be used as public bomb shelters beginning tonight.
“We are taking precautionary measures to protect citizens in light of the ongoing attacks,” she stated.
As emergency alerts were issued and sirens blared throughout the city, residents of Tehran described a sense of fear and anxiety.
“This bombardment level is unheard of. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a local resident stated, “The city feels like it’s on the brink.”
Although there are currently no official death tolls, unverified reports indicate that the airport’s infrastructure and the surrounding areas may have been damaged.
According to reports, flight operations have been halted at the targeted airports.
The attacks, which target vital infrastructure in Iran’s air and transportation networks, represent a dramatic escalation in the conflict.
Iranian officials have vowed to respond decisively, while calls for restraint continue to pour in from the international community in the course of Iran-Israel conflict.
