Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has acknowledged US role in Indo-Pak ceasefire, contradicting earlier denials.
In an interview with a Danish television network, Jaishankar acknowledged that amid the spike in tensions with Pakistan earlier in May, US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio had direct communication with the Indian government.
He claimed that while VP JD Vance contacted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US Secretary of State Marko Rubio had personally spoken with him.
“The highest level of communication was continuous. In a television appearance, Jaishankar grudgingly stated, “Vice President Vance contacted the prime minister, and Secretary Rubio was in contact with me.”
This assertion runs counter to previous stances expressed by the foreign secretary and the Indian government, who had flatly denied that the United States was involved in the ceasefire deal.
The Congress party questioned the legitimacy of the government after the interview by releasing a video footage of the interaction.
When a foreign journalist brings up the subject of Operation Sindoor in the video, Jaishankar is seen to be very uncomfortable, stuttering and perspiring.
What is the reason behind the foreign minister’s poor language skills? The Congress party’s social media statement, “Why the hesitation, why the sweat?” increased skepticism about the government’s openness.
