Jordanian fighter jets intercepted several Iranian drones flying over northern and central Jordan towards Israel, prompting Tehran to caution Jordan against aiding Israel.
The drones were taken down over the Jordanian side of the Jordan Valley and near the Iraqi-Syrian border. Meanwhile, US forces, based in the region, also shot down Iranian drones in southern Syria, close to Jordan’s border.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps of Iran claimed responsibility for launching drones and missiles towards Israel, heightening tensions between the two countries.
Jordan had previously announced the closure of its airspace as a precaution, denying reports of a state of emergency but expressing concerns about being caught in the conflict between Israel and Iranian allies like Hamas.
Jordan has sought increased military aid from the US, with whom it conducts military exercises and where hundreds of US troops are stationed.
A previous drone attack near the Syrian border resulted in casualties among US service members, escalating tensions in the region.
