The Aiwan-e-Sadr said Wednesday morning that Justice Afridi has been appointed for a set three-year term beginning on October 26.
He will be the 30th chief justice of Pakistan.
The announcement further stated that Justice Afridi would take the oath of office on October 26 and that the appointment was made in compliance with Articles 175A(3), 177, and 179 of the Constitution.
With a two-thirds majority, the Special Parliamentary Committee, which was established for the first time in the nation’s history to designate the CJP, nominated the top judge on Tuesday night.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif received the committee’s proposal for Yahya Afridi, and the president subsequently accepted it.
With the passage of the controversial 26th Constitutional Amendment Bill, which proposes that the CJP be “appointed on the suggestion of the Special Parliamentary Committee from amongst the three most senior judges of Supreme Court” with a two-thirds majority, this process of selecting the nation’s top judge was first used.
All parliamentary political parties are represented on the committee, including senators and National Assembly members from the opposition and government benches.
