Karachi will see major disruptions to public transport and road access over the next three days in connection with Muharram processions, with several government-run bus services temporarily halted and traffic diversions enforced across the city.
According to officials, operations of the Green Line BRT will be completely halted from Friday through Sunday. In addition, the Peoples Bus Service will experience route shutdowns: seven out of ten routes will remain non-operational on the 9th and 10th of Muharram, while five routes will face partial suspensions on the 8th.
To accommodate the religious gatherings, Karachi’s traffic police have introduced a revised traffic management plan for these days. The plan includes the closure of MA Jinnah Road, stretching from Guru Mandir to Tower, due to heightened security concerns.
Motorists have been urged to take alternate paths. For example, those departing from Nazimabad are advised to reroute through Lasbela Chowk and enter the Garden area to access Nishtar Park. Commuters from Liaquatabad should detour at Teen Hatti and use Martin Road. Travelers from Hassan Square heading toward PP Chowrangi are encouraged to opt for the route via Kashmir Road and Shahrah-e-Quaideen or take the Jail Flyover toward Teen Hatti and Lasbela.
With the main Muharram processions approaching, heightened security measures are in place. Barriers have been installed at several locations, particularly along the main procession routes. Commercial zones including MA Jinnah Road, Empress Market, Saddar, and Preedy Street were partially shut overnight to enhance safety.
Authorities have also deployed shipping containers at strategic entry points near Saddar to regulate vehicle flow and restrict access in sensitive zones.
