The federal government has announced on Tuesday that Wednesday, May 28, will be a public holiday to commemorate Youm-e-Takbeer, according to national media reports.
Details indicate that Youm-e-Takbeer will be celebrated as a national public holiday. In December 2024, May 28 was added to the list of general holidays.
Notably, Youm-e-Takbeer commemorates the anniversary of Pakistan’s nuclear testing, which were carried out in reaction to India’s nuclear tests in the Chagai district of Balochistan on May 28, 1998.
Pakistan became the seventh nuclear-armed state in the world and the first in the Muslim world as a result of these tests.
As a sign of strategic strength and national pride, the day is celebrated across the country.
All government offices, including local councils and related departments, would be closed on that day, according to the notification.
