The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has launched laser kidney stone treatment for children within the public healthcare system, setting up a dedicated unit at the Institute of Kidney Diseases (IKD) in Hayatabad.
As per media reports, this advanced procedure provides a non-surgical, minimally invasive option for pediatric patients, greatly improving treatment success rates.
Ehtesham Ali, Advisor to the Chief Minister on Health, inaugurated the new pediatric lithotripsy unit during his visit to IKD. He also unveiled several other upgraded facilities, including a state-of-the-art emergency department, a microbiology la, and a new administrative block.
Speaking at the event, Ali underscored the benefits of laser-based medical treatments. He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding access to modern healthcare services. “KP government is fully committed to provide best health care facilities for its people,” he added.
Under the Sehat Card Plus initiative, the KP government also started up a number of important medical projects earlier this year, such as free organ transplants and cochlear implants. The returning PTI-led government has fully restored these services, which had been suspended during the caretaker government in early 2023 owing to financial concerns.
Major medical operations including bone marrow transplants, liver and kidney transplants, thalassemia care, and cochlear implants are now covered by the Sehat Card Plus, which is a huge financial help to families that cannot afford such costly treatments.
