Lyari Building Collapse: Authorities confirmed the death toll after a five-storey residential building collapsed in the Lyari neighborhood early Friday morning.
Officials fear that at least 25 to 30 more people may still be buried beneath the debris, despite the fact that emergency personnel have so far rescued nine injured survivors.
Six families were housed in the building, which collapsed on Friday in the Baghdadi neighborhood of Lyari. Rescue personnel quickly arrived and dug through the debris with heavy equipment.
According to officials, the building was deemed unsafe three years ago, but neither the residents nor the authorities took any enforcement action. According to reports, the building had three apartments on each floor.
As a precaution, two nearby buildings—a two-story building and a seven-story building—have been evacuated. To avoid more risks, the gas and power supplies to the fallen structure have been turned off.
The rescue effort could take up to 24 hours, according to Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi. He encouraged people who lived in dangerous buildings to move willingly.
He stated that a meeting with the Sindh Building Control Authority has been called to discuss unlawful constructions, but that “we cannot force people out of their homes.”
Residents of the building received notices in 2022, 2023, and 2024, according to Karachi South Deputy Commissioner Javed Khoso. “It would be premature to assign blame at this stage,” he said, adding that 14 of the district’s 107 dangerous buildings have already been evacuated and 21 are categorized as extremely hazardous.
