Pakistani actress Mahira Khan ignited yet another debate when she recently spoke about the culture of traditional garment-wearing.
The actress was in conversation with the legendary poet Anwar Maqsood at the Arts Council Karachi, where she candidly spoke about her career, roots, and how her family brought her up.
She seemed to go back in time, remembering her late grandmother, saying, “I always kept away from sleeveless clothes just because of her respect.”.
She continued to say that the most important part is not to lose respect for the culture and dress modestly, and though the youth are smarter and more knowledgeable, they must preserve this “tarbiyat” upbringing and not let it get lost in time.
However, her comments have also opened a Pandora’s box online.
Many social media users were quick to point out how often Mahira herself has been spotted in sleeveless dresses whenever she attends public events. Critics slammed her for inconsistency, pointing out that her words did not fit her own choice of fashion.
But despite this criticism, Mahira Khan certainly retains her slot as one of the most popular figures, while her fans continue to lavish praise on the candid and reflective way in which she underlined the need for the continuance of cultural traditions.
Mahira, initiated into the industry as a VJ, moving on to films and TV dramas, maintains a status among the most loved personalities within the Pakistani screen, beyond borders included, right from her short Bollywood stint.
