Maryam Nawaz, the first-ever woman Punjab Chief Minister, has commended ASP Shehrbano for her courageous action to save a woman from an extremist mob on charges of blasphemy.
The Gulberg Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Syeda Shehrbano Naqvi, saved a woman from a mob in Lahore’s Ichhra bazaar. The woman was wearing a dress with Arabic calligraphy which the mob assumed to be Quranic verses and alleged that she had committed blasphemy.
Shehrbano addressed the mob saying, “During my service, I have handled three such incidents, and you should have trust in us [police],†according to a video circulating.

Maryam stated that she would personally invite Shehrbano to her office for her bravery in the face of such sensitive case. The CM Punjab added that she is ecstatic to witness such remarkable dedication from Punjab police officers, and potentially avoiding a mob lynching case that could ruin the life of the woman.
Taking to platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to extend her appreciation, Maryam wrote, “Thank you Shehrbano! We are all proud of you.”
In tandem, the Punjab Police chief has announced that the department has nominated ASP Shehrbano Naqvi for the Quaid-e-Azam Police Medal, the highest gallantry award for law enforcement in Pakistan.

For this heroic deed, the Punjab Police has recommended her name for the prestigious Quaid-e-Azam Police Medal (QPM), the highest gallantry award for law enforcement in Pakistan,” the police department’s official X handle shared, quoting IGP Dr. Usman Anwar.
