Punjab’s Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is scheduled to formally initiate Lahore’s upcoming Yellow Line Train venture within the year, on Saturday.
Insiders reveal that groundwork for the high-tech mass transit system is nearing completion, with the feasibility study in its final phase. Construction is expected to commence in September 2025, aiming for completion by mid-2026.
Stretching across 24 kilometers, the Yellow Line will connect Jinnah Bus Terminal to Harbanspura, tracing both sides of Lahore’s iconic Canal Road. The projected budget for this modern transport line ranges between Rs60 billion and Rs80 billion.
Designed to serve a large commuter base, the project includes plans for 18 advanced smart stations and aims to accommodate approximately 130,000 passengers daily. The development has also been earmarked for inclusion in the province’s next annual budget cycle.
To support operations, a fleet of 30 electric trains will be procured from China—similar models are currently in service in both China and the UAE.
While Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has already given preliminary approval for the initiative, the final endorsement from the Punjab cabinet is awaited.
Following that, the proposal will be submitted to ECNEC (Executive Committee of the National Economic Council) for federal clearance.
