Pakistani wicketkeeper and batsman Muhammad Rizwan is expected to replace Babar Azam as captain of the Pakistan cricket team.
Geo news reported that Babar Azam’s omission from the squad for the upcoming Champions One-Day Cup is a significant sign that he is soon going to be replaced.
On Friday, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) unveiled the five squads for the Champions Cup, a domestic tournament. The teams will be led by Mohammad Rizwan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Haris, and Saud Shakeel.
Reports suggested that there is a strong chance that the PCB will appoint a new captain, potentially replacing Babar Azam, later this year.
The new captain for the One-Day International (ODI) and T20 formats might be announced before Pakistan tours Australia, set for November.
It is important to mention that Babar Azam was reinstated as the white-ball captain on March 31, a few months after he resigned from the captaincy across all formats in November 2023, with Shan Masood being named as the Test captain.
