Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not be attending the forthcoming G7 Summit in Canada,.
Indian media reports stated that the decision came amid ongoing diplomatic tensions between New Delhi and Ottawa.
Reports also stated that neither side has initiated discussions regarding Modi’s participation, and that the bilateral relationship would need significant improvement before a visit of this stature could take place.
Specially, Canada has issued invitations to a small number of nations. Sources add that Canada did not include India among the invitees and would also need to address security issues if a visit were to take place.
No pre-scheduled visits or hints at a high-ranking dignitary visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi have been witnessed. Therefore, India will not be joining the G7 summit in Canada.
The G7 is an informal alliance of the world‘s leading industrialized economies, namely the US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Canada. The organizers have also invited the European Union, IMF, World Bank, and UN.
This is the first time in six years that Modi will probably be missing the G7 Summit, which will be taking place from June 15 to 17 in Kananaskis, Alberta. India-Canada relations have also been cold since the 2022 assassination of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia.
Tensions rose last year when Canada expelled six Indian diplomats, including the head of mission, charging them with plotting against Sikh separatists.
Though India’s participation remains unclear, other invitees such as South Africa, Ukraine and Australia have said to have confirmed attendance.
The summit would gather G7 countries’ leaders — Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US — the president of the European Commission and a number of guest countries.
