The National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC), a unit of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), has released multiple impact-based weather alerts as Pakistan gears up for widespread rain, strong gusts, and thunderstorms from June 29 to July 5.
In a number of areas, including Kashmir, northeast Punjab, the Potohar region, Islamabad, and upper and central Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, the NEOC issued a warning that excessive rainfall could cause landslides, flash floods, and urban flooding.
The alert warned that low-lying areas of Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Kohat, Rawalpindi, and Islamabad were at risk of urban flooding, especially between 9:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. on June 29.
The districts of Jhelum, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Lahore, and Faisalabad may also experience rain-related emergencies, and the Sargodha Division may experience localized flooding as a result of heavy rainfall.
Flash flooding and landslides can occur in northern regions, such as the Jhelum and Poonch valleys of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, as well as the Hazara and Malakand divisions in K-P.
The NEOC issued a warning about medium flows in the Swat River and low-level flooding in the Kabul River at Nowshera.
The Khunjerab, Ghujerab, and Braldu rivers are examples of glacial streams and tributaries in Chitral and Hunza that have been found to pose comparable risks.
The statement cautioned that “communication and electricity services, as well as transportation in hilly and mountainous areas, could be disrupted.”
