The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority has wrapped up hearings on key fuel adjustment petitions filed by K-Electric and CPPA, with decisions reserved for final review.
Under the April monthly fuel cost adjustment (FCA), K-Electric asked for an electricity price reduction of Rs4.79 per unit.
The business contended that, given the high rate of inflation and rising energy prices, the relief is warranted and ought to be passed on to customers.
To discuss the ramifications of a uniform tariff policy with the Law Ministry, the Power Division, however, once more requested a 15-day postponement of the hearing.
NEPRA Member Legal Amna Ahmed and the legal team vehemently opposed this request, claiming that the NEPRA Act contains no clause allowing for the withholding of fuel adjustments from consumers.
“If the Power Division wanted to consult the Law Ministry, it was their job, not ours,” the NEPRA chairman said, adding that the uniform tariff issue would be discussed in subsequent FCAs following cabinet approval.
Moonis Alvi, CEO of K-Electric, reaffirmed the company’s support for giving consumers relief, but he also admitted that K-Electric’s earnings would drop if NEPRA approved the Rs7 billion in aid.
