A gripping new documentary centered around the ill-fated Titan submersible expedition is set to make its debut on Netflix, promising an in-depth look into the tragedy that left the world stunned.
Titled “Titan: The OceanGate Disaster”, the film is directed by Mark Monroe—renowned for his storytelling in high-profile documentaries like Gone Girl and Britney vs Spears. The documentary will first premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival before being released for global streaming on June 11.
With its tagline “The deeper you look, the darker it gets,” the project explores the harrowing journey of Titan, a deep-sea submersible that disappeared in June 2023 during a commercial dive to the Titanic wreck site near Newfoundland, Canada. All five people on board, including OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, were killed after the vessel imploded mid-descent.
Monroe’s narrative traces the lead-up to the tragic event, examining Stockton Rush’s quest to revolutionize underwater tourism and the risks that ultimately proved fatal. Rather than simply recounting the moment the sub went silent, the documentary paints a broader picture of ambition, oversight, and the public’s obsession with Titanic lore.
Speaking about the project, Monroe said, “The disappearance of Titan was surreal—there was confusion, wall-to-wall coverage, and very few real answers. This film tries to understand how such a mission was allowed to happen, and who the man behind the sub really was.”
The documentary aims to shed light on the deeper questions surrounding the disaster, offering insight into the dangers of experimental deep-sea ventures and the pursuit of innovation in extreme environments.
