In spite of fierce speculation after a high-profile luncheon meet between Field Marshal Asim Munir and US President Donald Trump at the White House on Wednesday, Pakistan’s stance in favor of Iran during its current war with Israel remains “100 percent the same”, according to senior sources.
Those close to the White House meeting between Field Marshal Asim Munir and former American President Donald Trump confirmed that Pakistan stands “firmly” on its position regarding the Iran-Israel conflict.
As per one highly placed source, Pakistan remains supporting Iran “100 percent,” even after the speculation surrounding the much-publicized meeting. “We are the only ones making an effort for them [Iran],” the source explained, reiterating that Pakistan has not changed its stance and that it will continue its support for Iran just like before.
The Trump-Munir meeting, which concluded with public appreciation from Trump for Pakistan’s military leader, created controversy among some political quarters in Pakistan—most notably PTI supporters. Social media backlash ensued, with social media users expressing disappointment and even whispering that Pakistan could be changing its foreign policy under the influence of the United States.
One PTI leader now on the run orchestrated a series of tweets spreading conspiracy theories on whether there was a change in policy, suggesting U.S. pressure could have made Islamabad reconsider its strategy vis-a-vis the Iran-Israel war.
Such rumors were put to rest on Thursday when Pakistan’s Foreign Office categorically reaffirmed the country’s long-held stance.
Foreign Office Spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan
Foreign Office Spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan condemned what he termed “unjustified and illegitimate aggression” by Israel against Iran in a report by APP. He called on the international community as well as the United Nations to act swiftly to put an end to Israeli military operations and hold Israel responsible for its breach of international law.
Khan also reconfirmed that Pakistan “stood in resolute solidarity with the people of Iran” and severely condemned Israel’s “blatant provocations”, warning these actions are a grave threat to peace and stability within the region and wider world.
Even with the geopolitical tremors brought about by the Trump-Munir meeting, Islamabad seems unmoved in its regional commitments, especially the support it has rendered Iran in the face of Israeli aggression.
