The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), has released a weather advisory, predicting heavy monsoon rains in the province on Muharram 9 and 10, sources reported.

PDMA spokesperson said that the rains are likely to start as early as July 5. He alerted several districts, especially of southern and central Punjab, to the possibility of severe weather posing danger to inhabitants and infrastructure.

The authority has appealed to the public and local authorities to be extra cautious and take required measures to avoid any possible risks.

Provincial Disaster Management Authority Director General Irfan Ali Kathia asked organizers of Muharram processions to have strict safety protocols in place in view of the severe weather warning.

He particularly stressed avoiding large gatherings on crumbling rooftops and keeping a distance from electric poles and lines to avoid accidents.

The DG also urged residents, particularly those along rivers and streams, to refrain from crossings whenever possible because of the increased danger of flash floods, especially in the hilly parts of Dera Ghazi Khan where flooding is anticipated.

Section 144 Imposed in Pakistan

Earlier, Section 144 was imposed throughout the province from June 27 to July 6, 2025 (1st to 10th Muharram), by the Punjab government owing to security issues during Muharram-ul-Haram.

The order is directed towards guaranteeing public safety, preserving religious harmony, and avoiding any untoward occurrence during the observance of Muharram.

It is notable here that Punjab’s monsoon rains killed 18 people including 11 children, while 57 people were injured in rain-related accidents within 24 hours.

Provincial Disaster Management Authority in a factsheet issued, stated that majority of deaths occurred due to collapse of weak buildings and ceilings.

The rain caused damage to 27 houses, PDMA reported. “Two persons lost their lives in the incidents of lightning strike in Khanewal and Okara while two children got electrocuted to death in Mandi Bahauddin,” the report added.
