PM calls for enhanced disaster management after Swat tragedy

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has instructed the National Disaster Management Authority to develop a coordinated program with provincial disaster management authorities to prevent incidents like the recent Swat tragedy.

He said these things on Tuesday when he visited the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) of the NDMA in Islamabad.

Additionally, he oversaw the compilation of thorough reports on these incidents, pointing out that approximately 49 people have died, and numerous others have been injured throughout Pakistan.

In addition to praising the modern NEOC facility, Sharif promised that the government would offer all the support required to fortify the organization and increase its capabilities.

In order to build resilient infrastructure in Pakistan, PM Shehbaz disclosed that he has given Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal and Climate Change Minister Musadik Malik the responsibility of obtaining grants and investments—rather than loans—through public-private partnership.

Regarding water security, he expressed alarm about India’s belligerent actions concerning the Indus Water Treaty and declared that the government would use Pakistan’s own resources to build non-controversial water storage facilities.

The prime minister also emphasized Pakistan’s susceptibility to cloudbursts, pointing out that even though the nation contributes very little to global greenhouse gas emissions, it is becoming more vulnerable to these storms.

He also emphasized the need for the highest level of readiness to reduce future risks in light of the recent destruction brought on by abrupt glacial melting brought on by an unheard-of heatwave.
