The Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, expressed satisfaction over the Court of Arbitration’s partial award on the Indus Waters Treaty, calling it a “vindication” of Pakistan’s viewpoint.
According to him, the court’s ruling has improved Pakistan’s standing internationally.
According to the prime minister, the ruling has made it clear to everyone that India cannot unilaterally revoke the Indus Waters Treaty.
He emphasized the strategic value of water, referring to it as Pakistan’s lifeline, and reaffirmed the government’s resolve to take the management and development of the nation’s water resources seriously.
Also, PM Shehbaz had praised the work of Attorney General Mansoor for Pakistan Usman Awan and Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar in persuasively arguing Pakistan’s position.
It’s important to remember that the Court of Arbitration that oversees the Indus Waters Treaty has rejected India’s unilateral attempt to suspend the treaty and put an end to arbitration proceedings, ruling in favor of Pakistan’s position.
The Permanent Court of Arbitration’s (PCA) ruling upholds Pakistan’s long-standing stance that neither party may unilaterally suspend or terminate the Indus Waters Treaty.
The court ruled that without both parties’ consent, India is not permitted by the treaty or international law to interfere with the arbitration process or to back out of its commitments.
