The parliamentary party of the ruling party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has resolved to enforce new loyalty oaths on its legislators in a move indicating further political apprehension despite fears that defections could occur after a Supreme Court ruling on the reserved seats.
Media report on Tuesday stated that the PTI will hold an important parliamentary party meeting at Islamabad on Wednesday.
Federal and provincial members of national and provincial assemblies that are members of the party have been instructed to do so.
According to the party insiders, the first focal point of the meeting will be the recent change in the shifting politics due to the recent ruling of the apex court that had dismantled PTI to its claim of nearly 80 seats, reserved in the country and provincial legislatures.
One will also talk about political maths in Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) where alliances might make the difference in the ensuing days.
In K-P, especially, where independents supported by PTI are dominant, the party leadership is cautious in the advances of opposing political parties.
Thirty-five of these independence-who have been associated with PTI before-will be supposed to repeat oath of allegiance, swearing allegiance to the party.
A brief of the Supreme Court, given last week, reviewed a previous July 12, 2024, decision that presented PTI with status as a parliamentary party and gave it the right to reserve seats.
The new decision has greatly changed the line of power in the National Assembly which has strengthened the positioning of the ruling coalition which now firmly holds the hands of a two-thirds majority- a development which has great implications on constitutional transfiguration and governance.
