A renowned figure in political as well as religious circles, Mr Pooya was a federal minister and also served as the director of the Institute of Strategic Studies.
Agha Murtaza was known for his intellectual acumen and constructive role in public life, especially at junctures of grave import in the political history of Pakistan.
He was also the founder and owner of a leading English-language newspaper, through which he attempted to shape national debate and foster enlightened discussion on foreign affairs, interfaith harmony, and constitutional matters.
Agha Murtaza was a member of the Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT), for which he acted as the party‘s senior vice president. His membership in the PAT indicated his intense passion for reformist politics and religious activism.
His funeral prayers will be offered today (Friday) after Juma prayers at Imambargah Sadiq G-9, Islamabad. Political leaders, religious scholars, and civil society members will be in attendance.
It is pertinent to note that Agha Murtaza was the son of Ayatullah Agha Hajji Mirza Mahdi Puya Yazdi who was a Twelver Shia Muslim and an Islamic scholar. The most notable contribution of Mahdi Muya is his famous tafsir of the Qur’an which is one of the most accepted tafsir of Quran.
