Seasoned Pakistani actress Samina Peerzada isn’t buying into the idea that a woman’s earnings lack “barakah” or divine blessing that supposedly makes income more valuable.
In a recent appearance on a local TV channel, she opened up about the role of women in family life, her contributions at home, and what respect really means for them. Some snippets from this interview blew up on social media, sparking quite the debate among netizens with all kinds of opinions flying around.
In one clip that caught a lot of attention, a journalist tossed a question her way about that common belief—that women’s money is somehow “air money” or doesn’t carry any blessings. Samina shot back, saying, “I’ve heard that too, but honestly, it’s all rubbish. Me and my husband both put in the hard work and got great results. I’ve toiled to build our home, raise our girls, and give them a good education.”
She went on to share a touching moment, “Usman recently congratulated me on how well I’ve raised and taught our girls. Seriously, how could I have done that if my income wasn’t a blessing? While Usman was busy building our house, I was investing in their education. We tackled everything together.”
When it comes to respect, Samina has some strong thoughts. “It doesn’t really matter if a man opens the door for me or not. But if he does, it shows he was raised right—his mother taught him to respect women,” she explained.
She added with a smile, “If my husband doesn’t open the door, that’s fine; I can handle it myself. But when Usman does, I can’t help but say, ‘Ammi, you’ve done a great job!’ It shows he’s a good man who genuinely cares about me—he takes me on trips and looks after me.”
Earlier, another actress, Nadia Khan, pointed out that the idea of barakah isn’t really about gender; it’s more about whether the income comes from halal or haram means.
