An unpleasant event occurred at the WAPDA Complex at Sheikhupura, when an old woman had gone to have her electricity bill corrected and forced out by a security guard- a scene that was recorded and is presently viral on social media.
In the video, the woman is crying helplessly, and the guard is man handling and shoving the way out of the gate of the office.
The video has caused great indignation to people and citizens of the country have demanded stern action and how the old people and vulnerable are handled by the state employees.
It is unconditionally wrong, how can somebody be treated in this way just because he/she rectified a bill, one of the users posted. One of them further said, WAPDA should be answerable to this inhumane behaviour.
To stop the heat, the Senior Circle Officer (SCO) of WAPDA promptly came into the picture and directed an official investigation to take place stating that this kind of mistreatment cannot be tolerated.
The situation fast degenerated into a major issue thus necessitating the involvement of the District Police Officer (DPO). The security guard was taken in custody and a formal case has been registered against him.
The authorities assured citizens that they will handle the incident openly and justice will be provided.
The incident has rekindled the issue of service delivery to customers in government institutions and necessity that security personnel and front-line individuals who come into contact with citizens daily should be trained on matters of sensitivity.
The debate about the video is still ongoing in the online community, and the voice to introduce changes in the rules and close supervision of the behaviour of those who offer their services to the general society is getting louder and louder.
