Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif, underscored that only the state possesses the constitutional authority to announce jihad, rejecting the legitimacy of such declarations by private individuals or factions.
Addressing a multi-faith gathering of religious leaders and civil society members in Karachi, the military spokesperson highlighted the importance of fostering collective peace and inclusivity as tools to counter divisive elements within and beyond Pakistan’s borders.
“Decisions related to jihad cannot be taken by any person or group—this responsibility lies strictly with the state,” Lt Gen Sharif asserted, while speaking on the need for cohesion among diverse communities to build resilience against threats.
He reaffirmed that citizens of all faiths enjoy equal standing under Pakistan’s Constitution, which protects the rights of every community. The general stressed that unity must be rooted in respect, equality, and coexistence, adding that sectarian or ethnic prejudices undermine the country’s core values.
Addressing regional security concerns, he also pointed to Indian involvement in destabilizing Pakistan through indirect support of militant networks, assuring that the armed forces are equipped with contemporary strategies to neutralize such threats.
Calling for greater solidarity, Lt Gen Sharif said, “Our strength lies in our unity. A united nation can withstand any pressure or aggression.”
The session aimed at reinforcing interfaith harmony saw participation from minority representatives and social activists. Attendees commended the Pakistan Army for its initiatives to bridge societal divides and encouraged more such engagements to deepen mutual understanding across communities.
