Taliban high ranking officials in Afghanistan are ‘Wanted’ by the International Criminal Court over women rights abuses.
The chief of the prosecution of the International Criminal Court has revealed that he is issuing warrants for them.
Arrest warrants are targeting suspects accused of crimes against humanity for their attacks on women.
Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan attributed criminal responsibility to Supreme Leaders. Haibatullah Akhundzada and Chief Justice Abdul Hakim Haqqani are amongst them.
He further stated that there are good reason to believe that they are undergoing gender-based reprisal.
“These steps indicate the mistreatment of women and girls in Afghanistan cannot go unaddressed,” Khan stated.
Moreover, he added, Afghan women, girls, and the LGBTQ community are under intense persecution under Taliban rule.
He described it as unprecedented and unacceptable in the contemporary world.
The prosecutor has formally applied to the ICC judges for his application for arrest warrants against alleged leaders to be considered.
Whereas, the decision making might take several months to several weeks. However, the duration and will involve extended judicial scrutiny.
This action exemplifies the commitment of the International Criminal Court. It aims to bring perpetrators of mass human rights violations to justice.
The Hague-based court is given the task of dealing with the “most serious crimes in the world, such as war crimes and crimes against humanity.
